The verb 'to meander' usually refers to the winding course of a river, road, or wind current, but also to wandering aimlessly. With Meander, Curating the Young invites visitors to wander around and escape for a moment from our current society, in which efficiency and control are central.
As part of Fringe, Curating the Young is organizing the Meander exhibition. Spread throughout the Vaartkom, five young emerging artists are presenting work that pays tribute to wandering. Like our artists, we encourage visitors and casual passers-by to explore aimlessly and be inspired by the works and the surroundings. There is no goal, no fixed route, or predetermined destination. Let yourself be guided by curiosity, intuition, and chance.
Ode to wandering
Visitors are invited to wander and follow their own path. Meander presents the work of five artists inspired by the ideas of losing one’s way, searching, and experimenting. Their installations, performances, and images encourage moments of pause, deviation, or discovery. For it is precisely in those moments of uncertainty and trial that surprising insights often emerge — both in science and in art.
Fringe
The Fringe Festival, of which Meander is also a part, ties into the 600th anniversary of KU Leuven with the theme “knowledge knows no end.” Fringe encourages its visitors to slow down and pay tribute to wandering in a world that revolves around efficiency and results. For three weeks, thirteen arts organizations from Leuven will present a fascinating program featuring visual arts, circus, punk, sound installations, and much more. You can discover new and unknown artists at various locations throughout the city. They show how they come to new ideas or insights by searching, wandering, and sometimes returning. Deviate from the shortest route, get lost along the side paths, and be surprised by the beauty that unfolds along the way.

The route
The most important thing about the route is… there isn’t one! Meander through the Vaartkom Area and get surprised by the art you - accidentally, or not - walk into. Every ‘meanderer’ can thus make their own journey, creating a personal story constitutes by the discoveries they make along the way. To make sure you don’t miss a single artwork, we created a map connecting all the installations, suggesting different routes and connections between them. But feel free to create your own!
Some practicalities
Most of the artworks are located outside. The ones inside OPEK are visible from the outside, through a window.
Even though we value the spontaneity of walking, we do encourage to start your route at OPEK. At the reception, you’ll find an info brochure (including artists and artwork information, the map and an exhibition poster) and an activation booklet to take with you on the walk, that encourage you to take the meandering to another level.. Other merchandise, like stickers, might also be present, to take home with you as a souvenir. Above all, you can warm up with a hot drink before or after the walk at Café Entrepot in OPEK.
